2016

I've kept this blog, on and off, since 2006. In 2015 I used it to chart daily encounters, images, thoughts and feelings about volcanic basalt/bluestone in Melbourne and Victoria, especially in the first part of the year. I plan to write a book provisionally titled Bluestone: An Emotional History, about human uses of and feelings for bluestone. But I am also working on quite a few other projects and a big grant application, especially now I am on research leave. I'm working mostly from home, then, for six months, and will need online sociability for company!

Rejoice with us, for we have kittens

This has been a plan in the making for a month or two, now. I still feel the presence of dear Mima, and her photo is still attached to my computer screen. I also looked for her when I came home yesterday, after nearly three weeks away. But for a while now the house has seemed to lack a certain something; and yesterday we brought home two wee kittens, just three months old. One is dark brown, whom we have called Orlando, though I am already thinking of her as "the lady Orlando", as in Sally Potter's film. Here she is:

And her brother we have called... well, here's a question: should it be Wulf, Woolf, or Wolf? Which is the least naff? He has a tremendous appetite, so Wolf may be the most appropriate. But should we indulge the medievalism of Wulf? Or the link to Orlando of Woolf? Votes welcome!

And just in case there were any doubt about their utter cuteness....

I should say that whatever you think of our naff names, they are a whole lot better than the fancy faux-aristocratic names they came with...

*clasps hands, helpless in the face of cutitude*

I like Wolf best -- it sort of encompasses the others.

Or you could call him Hogarth, which is a nice word/picture puzzle and a nod to both the Woolves.

But probably not Hodge, Jeoffry, Selima, McCavity or Mrs Norris.

Beautiful kittens. Wolf or Wulf is my vote.

My goodness, what gorgeous colors they both are! I vote for Wulf.

Bwahahahaha! Finally succumbed, tho a house does lack a certain something without an animal presence.
They're very beautiful. I rather like 'Wulf' (what about 'Wulf and Eadwacer'?) I immediately thought of 'Leonard', of course, both because of Mr Woolf and my former feline beloved.

Congratulations, Stephanie.

We lost our dear 17-year-old cat last May, and are still not ready to adopt again. Someday, perhaps.

For what it's worth, I prefer "Wolf".

Well, Lachlan, it's funny. It's not at all like having Mima back. She'll never be replaced. But there is something rather wonderful about seeing these kittens getting to know us, and recognise our voices, and so forth. And oh, last night, when they were both snuggling up to watch Spooks with me on the couch...
