2016

I've kept this blog, on and off, since 2006. In 2015 I used it to chart daily encounters, images, thoughts and feelings about volcanic basalt/bluestone in Melbourne and Victoria, especially in the first part of the year. I plan to write a book provisionally titled Bluestone: An Emotional History, about human uses of and feelings for bluestone. But I am also working on quite a few other projects and a big grant application, especially now I am on research leave. I'm working mostly from home, then, for six months, and will need online sociability for company!

Reasons not to be cheerful

  • We lost the Ashes
  • Essendon lost to Fremantle
  • It is a little rainy today, but so windy the rain is not sticking around long enough to make any impact on the garden or the tanks
  • Chapter Five is horrible

However hard I try, I can only be sympathetic on points 3 and 4.

What can I say? I'm a Magpies fan that doesn't like Ricky Ponting ; )

Do you mean that what you have written of Chapter Five thus far is horrible, or that the whole experience of writing Chapter Five (of which you are presumably in the throes) is horrible?

Either way I think you should stop for the day, make some scones, and eat them with jam and cream for arvo tea when Joel gets home from school.

well *I* don't like Ricky Ponting today, either!

PC, well, I thought I had it kind of wrapped up, but now I look at it again it is falling to pieces under my gaze. You know, when the best solution to difficult patches seems to be to delete them. But I am struggling on, and I have made a decision about the sub-headings. The chapter is called "Ritual, Change and the Invention of Tradition" and the section titles are as follows:

•Writing Tradition
•“Silence and Sorrow”: Histories of Decay and Corruption
•Reforming the Order
•“Ladies of Eminence Known to Us”

That last is a quotation from the Statute of QEII when she decided women could become full Garter companions...

Funny you should mention scones. I whipped up a batch of orange and date scones from the recipe in the Age on Saturday, yesterday, and P and I shared the last one for lunch.

But there is a piece of prune and mascarpone tart left over from last night, too. You can tell I'm writing, can't you, because I am cooking.

I was going to comment on the scones but the prune and marscapone tart trumped them.

I cook when it's essay writing time of semester. And my bathroom is never cleaner.
